The chain of contempt is very omnipresent in the music circle, whether professionals or amateurs. Since the cost for learning different types of music is different, and the amount of knowledge needed to understand different types of music varies, we can often find music lovers of different styles (not only those who play music, but even who listen to music) are running a contempt chain, and even show mutual contempt. Some rock’n’roll musicians belittle the pop, the pop disdain the folk, the folk scorn the rappers, while some classical lovers even despise all of the above.
Of course, it is undeniable that the closer the music gets to the top of the contempt chain, the more difficult and expensive it is to appreciate and play. However, that is exactly why some parents who let their children learn classical music, or people who listen to niche music, use their hobbies and aesthetic orientations as an excuse to show off their family background, education level and sense of superiority, trying to get a sense of accomplishment by belittling others.
Classical music and rap are respectively at the top and the bottom of the musical contempt chain. This assignment uses the most typical Lieder (art song) configuration of classical music(1 piano +1 vocal) to perform a rap piece. The two performers, dressed in suits and ties, stood elegantly before the piano and performed a rap piece that had nothing to do with classical music. The original rap by Mercy, Classic, I rewrites the satirical lyrics and creates a piano accompaniment.
In the work, the way the performer actually sings contrasts with what the audience expects. The starting point is to satirize the chain of contempt and break the form of music so that the audience will reflect what makes them place a piece of music somewhere in the contempt chain, the form itself, the difficulty of appreciating it, or the performer’s class?
