ABSTRACT
Ecological HCI (EHCI) centers on interactive technologies that are aware of and integrated with ecological systems and principles. Introduced at CHI 2024, it highlights emerging nature-centered studies and seeks to expand the scope of Sustainable HCI through a more-than-human perspective. However, as a new concept, it faces several challenges, including a lack of a systematic summarization and comparisons of existing approaches. To this end, we conduct a literature review focused on materials design and fabrication which can directly affect the production, consumption, and applications of EHCI. We review 45 articles related to EHCI, providing an overview of the state-of-the-art studies, and propose a taxonomy and design framework to guide future practices. Additionally, we synthesize key discussions from CHI 2024 that contribute to shaping the concept of EHCI. This study serves as a first review of EHCI and offers insights into how existing studies can provide references for future development in EHCI.
